The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a unique agreement across nations of the world on common domestic and global goals and priority actions to achieve these goals. The goals and actions cover policy areas in the economy, environment and society, and together create an intersectoral vision for improvements in human and planetary health, peace, partnership and prosperity. As such, goal 3, on the health of people, “ensuring health lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages”, is a goal that can only be achieved if actions for many different goals are realised. The SDGs list many key actions on determinants of health, also highlighting reductions of within country inequalities in health determinants as a key priority. Similarly, stakeholders concerned with addressing the determinants of the social gradient in health (social determinants of health and health inequities) call on governments to embrace an intersectoral vision of health. Given the large range of health determinants covered by the SDGs and its emphasis on greater social inequity, the social determinants of health (SDH) community is aligning its tools and efforts more generally to address health determinants and health justice with the Sustainable Development Goals agenda where possible. This includes supporting the actions described in the SDGs for Universal Health Coverage and other health services, as well as the actions in other goals that focus on improving important conditions for good population health and health equity.
