MAIN ROLE:

LINKS TO SDGs:

Local government can play a defining role in delivering the SDGs. It is recognized that cities (and rural centres) are places where planning and policy-making is closest to communities. Achieving the SDGs will require close synergy between the global and national goals, and local plans and programmes. Implementing urban development planning and policies which reduce poverty and inequity, address individual rights, build social capital and social inclusion, and promote sustainable urban resource use (Shanghai Consensus on Healthy Cities, 2016) are some of the interventions which local governments lead to address the determinants of health and health equity, and progress action on the SDGs.
